Form, Model, Syntax, Display is the third monograph on the work of Terence Gower. Although best known for his large research-based installations of twentieth-century architecture and urbanism, this recent body of work analyses post-war abstract sculpture. Gower is interested in how abstract form - in sculpture and architecture - represents abstract ideas, and how these forms' associated meanings change over time. He has studied the work of artists such as Barbara Hepworth and Isamu Noguchi, using drawing, room-sized mobiles and sculptures in papier mache, polystyrene, stone and concrete. The design of this book, including its layout and title, is closely modelled on the 1960s Vision oValue book series (Braziller, New York), in which Gyorgy Kepes invited contributors from wide-ranging disciplines to write on the same cultural or scientific theme. Gower has invited seven writers from literature, art and the social sciences to contribute essays, each accompanied by documentation from the artist's ten-year study of modern sculpture. Form, Model, Syntax, Display is published to coincide with the installation of Six Formes, a public artwork commissioned by the Region Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, France. 70 illustartions
