Widow Anne Sherwood has an innate "gift" for feeling the emotions of plants. A natural botanical sketch artist, she is hired by a renowned collector to make drawings of his exotic plants. She travels to Ireland where she meets adventurer and sample collector Michael McEvoy. Michael is a sensual man, attuned with nature, having lived in the wilds most of his life. He is beholden to Lord Connock for giving him his work. He looks to Lord Connock as a father figure. But something evil is growing inside Connock's famed glasshouses and Anne begins to sense that the local flora and fauna is dying. And the local people are affected too. But how to explain her "gift" to this man she has come to love? And how to tell him that Connock, a man he greatly admires, is a fraud?
