The introduction of professional rugby to New Zealand in the mid 1990s brought about huge changes in attitude to the national sport. Many lament the dominance of the dollar and the commercialisation of the All Blacks. Yet the game continues to be loved at grassroots level, and there is always a new generation of children hooked by the game at club and school level. Many of the people responsible for carrying on the traditions of New Zealand rugby are unsung heroes who give up their Saturdays to coach the teams, make the teas, polish the boots, referee the games and ferry the kids around the country. For the Love of the Game is a celebration of New Zealand grassroots rugby and the people who make it happen. In words and photographs, it tells the story of a great love affair that is pursued in every corner of New Zealand. Specifically, the book will include:
- The big rivalries: Some of the big school clashes such as Auckland Grammar versus Kings
- The after-match: weird and wonderful rituals that some clubs have for post-match entertainment
- Family: stories of father/son involvement in various clubs; also grandfather-father-son stories and mum-sister involvement
- Finals day: club finals days can unleash both elation and dejection
- The fund-raiser: clubs find innovative ways to raise money
- When the stars come out: inevitably the big-name All Blacks return to play for their clubs.
