The departure of the last ferry from Folkestone in December 1991 brought to an end almost 150 years of cross-Channel passenger shipping from the port. As quickly as the past recedes however, the future arrives, and the Channel Tunnel terminal now covers many acres of what was once farmland. The photographs in this selection stop the clock. They recall a genteel resort with its roots in a thriving fishing village community, and a townscape unaffected by the tyranny of the motor car. They remind us of the delightful shop fronts which predated the chain store domination of the present and of the variety of buses which once moved people around. There are glimpses of vanished streets and alleys, and of once familiar sights which are now no more than memories.
