The letters of Paul to Timothy, one of his favourite delegates, often make for difficult reading in today's world. They contain much that makes modern readers uncomfortable, and much that is controversial, including prounouncements on the place of women in the Church, homosexuality, and many incisive polemics against so-called "false teachers." There is still, despite their importance in the Bible, a great deal to learn about these provocative letters. Luke Timothy Johnson, one of the best known New Testament scholars today, has written a commentary which will prove useful to scholars and laypeople alike eager to navigate the letters to Timothy. It will also attract a great deal of attention in the scholarly community for its seemingly paradoxical conclusion that the letters were indeed written by Paul himself (the prevailing opinion since the 19th Century is that they were actually written by someone else, and that Paul's name was signed to them to give them authority). Using the best of both modern and ancient scholarship, Dr. Luke Timothy Johnson has written the definitive commentary on the First and Second Letters to Timothy and yet another brilliant work in the Anchor Bible series.
