Orde Charles Wingate was arguably the most eccentric and charismatic of all the generals on either side of World War II. Churchill thought him a genius; others considered him over-rated; a few even thought him mad. In 1930s Palestine he became a hero to the Israelis and an ardent Zionist. From Israel, Wingate went to Ethiopia where he routed Mussolini's legions and helped restore Haile Selassie to his throne. Finally he went to Burma, where his Chindits shattered the myth of Japanese invincibility. This fascinating new study reveals him to be a brilliant maverick, but also an inspiring leader.
