James Salisbury is a distance runner, one of the best the Hill District has seen. He trains as though his life depends upon it, pushing himself hard on the unforgiving bush tracks. He's training for the state titles, where he'll win that gold medal. Not even the ever-present danger of bushfires can deter him from his goal.
Then a new boy joins the athletics club. James isn't worried – the kid hardly looks like a runner. But Gavin and his father are cheats who don't consider losing an option. They will do anything to claim a victory, employing tactics that threaten to destroy James whole track campaign.
Ages: 12+
Then a series of bushfires make training in the bush a risky prospect for anyone. James refuses to let the firebug wreck his season. But as the fire moves suddenly closer to his family home, James realises he has more than his running career at stake. His credibility may be on the line, but if he doesn't catch the firebug, his life could be too...
