Fifteen-year-old Finn, the only survivor when his father's small plane crashes in the mountains, is unable to speak even when he recovers from his physical injuries. Psychiatrists say he must make himself recall every detail of the accident, but Finn's memory shuts down when he tries to face the tragedy once again.
Living with his grandmother on her Vermont farm, which he has always loved, does not heal his mental anguish. His greatest help comes in renewing his friendship with Julia, who is nearly fourteen years old, whom he's known since childhood, a neighbor who comes to train Gran's new filly. Together, they discover a wolf dog living wild in a dense pine forest on the farm, and it slowly begins to trust Finn who rescues it from a trap. The routine of their lives is jolted when Finn and Julia discover that drug dealers are using an abandoned, now-dry well in the forest as a drop for their supplies.
