Father Frank Dempsey is a Roman Catholic priest who harbours an almighty secret: he doesn't believe in God.
To the young Frank, confession was like a trip to the launderette. So when he gets a place at Oxford to read theology, it confirms to his parents that God does indeed move in mysterious ways.
Despite his secret, or maybe because of it, he becomes an inspirational priest. His unconventional methods, which include driving a taxi to raise funds, bring his flock together and transform what was once a drab North London parish. Members of the congregation from Danny the garrulous builder and Pat the henpecked husband, all work their passage to heaven helping to restore the local parish hall.
It's all going beautifully until Sarah Marshall hops into his taxi and his life, slowly putting his vows under incredible strain.
