Barrister Tom Fawley is defending Richard Kingsley because he is being paid to do it.
The victim a sixteen-year-old girl, was stabbed forty-three times in what appears to be a frenzied sexual ritual, her blood staining an ancient stone circle. The accused is Richard Kingsley, a wheelchair-bound novelist of sleaze and titillation who has confessed almost proudly to her murder, and to a string of sexual offenses against even younger girls.
Then Kingsley retracts his confession. A sensational trial begins. And Tom Fawley is unwillingly drawn deeper and deeper into the case, until at last he is lured to Stonebury, the village that holds the key to the shocking truth.
