One day Rita went to the shopping mall and mislaid her womb, somewhere between Reynolds' Shoes and the lingerie counter of her favourite department store. Mall security, though sympathetic, can only offer the promise of a compensatory gift certificate. The outlook for Rita, and her increasingly disorientated partner George, looks bleak, until talk show host Rod Nodderman hears of her plight. Suddenly America's caught up in womb fever - bizarre reproductive mishaps and spurious sightings of the errant uterus abound.
But Rita still has not got her womb back, and the longer she's without it the more she realises how important, how emblematic and yet how peculiarly foreign a womb really is . . .
