After the devastation of the Great War, Fos returns to America and eventually a job at the central site of the government's race to build the atomic bomb. It is here, after the bomb is dropped over Hiroshima, and his wife falls ill with radiation poisoning, that Fos finds his great faith in science and humanity deserting him.
