There is dismay on the Shelby estate when Uncle Tom, Eliza and her son Harry are sold to pay off their master's debts. Taking Harry, Eliza races in terror towards the freedom of Canada, hunted down by the slave-trader's men. Tom is carried off in chains. As he is shipped South for auction, he struggles to retain his compassion for the brutal men who now control his destiny.

'Uncle Tom's Cabin' helped to provoke changes in American slave laws. It is here published alongside Frederick Douglass's 'Narrative', which also enjoyed enormous contemporary influence. It has become a principal document of the black movement in America and Douglass himself one of the key figures in the black emancipation.
