An explorer discovers what he thinks is an Egyptian temple in an Australian rainforest, in the hope that his reputation (and his fortune) will be secured for life. When he emerges weeks later minus the treasure, and clinically insane, the question arises: what hideous secret does the rainforest hide?
Months later Modo interviews the explorer in Bedlam, the notorious hospital for the insane, and the information he discovers along with a map that mysteriously appears, leads him, Mr. Socrates, Octavia and Tharpa to Australia.
Landing in Sydney, they assemble a balloon and travel north to the rainforest, only to be attacked by Miss Hakkandottir, piloting her own dirigible. Modo is able to fend off the attackers but is separated from his friends and gets lost in the rainforest, where he is discovered by an ancient tribe.
Meanwhile, the Clockwork Guild has been attempting unlock the secrets of the Egyptian temple. Can Modo and his companions circumvent the curse, and find out the truth?
