In a castle at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains, an old aristocrat waits to greet the friend he has not seen for forty-one years. In the course of one night, from dinner until dawn, the two men will fight a duel of words, of stories, of accusations and evasions. The encounter will encompass their entire lives - and also that of a third person, missing from the candlelit dining hall: the chateline of the castle.
They were the closest of friends in their youth. Inseperable, indomitable, from the drawing rooms of Vienna to the grand halls of the castle, their tight circle opened only once, to enfold the chateline. Then a murky, traumatic event - something to do with thwarted intention, and a gun - led to their sudden separation. They have spent the intervening years anticipating this moment, waiting for the devastating truth to be revealed.
'Embers' is an extraordinary story of love and friendship, of fidelity, pride and betrayal.
