Illustrated by Kim Gamble
Timmy and Eight, a plush toy octopus, have been friends for as long as Timmy can remember. Eight goes to school with him, and at night he sleeps on Timmy’s bed. Eight and Timmy go everywhere together, including on a picnic to the National Park with Mum and Dad. When they come back home, Timmy realises with horror that they have left Eight behind. Dad comforts Timmy by reminding him how strong and brave Eight is. Timmy is lonely and sad, but begins to imagine all the adventures that Eight is having. Later, when Timmy is reunited with Eight, he realises that Eight is strong enough and clever enough to sleep by himself now.
