In Nan's own words: The book is images of children. This has always been one of my ongoing subjects. The photos have ranged from the kids of my friends to unknown children; it is one rare category in which I've photographed on the street. I photograph kids alone, in relationships with siblings, parents and their friends, from kids dressed in costumes for a carnival in Mexico to children at Coney to child prostitutes in Manila. The age of my subjects varied from newborn infants to teenagers and there are subjects in which I have documented their entire lives to the present day. The portraits show children in their vastly changing emotional states, from lonely and introverted to their socal connections to flying through the air. These images are not typical children pictures, but are a complex investigation in childhood and audiences often comment that the children look like they are from another planet of magical species.
In the early '90s I had an exhibition of part of this series at my gallery in New York, which I installed at the level of the kids' viewpoint. A lot of subjects of my historical work such as Amanda, I now photograph as a mother of twins. In the last three years this has become one of the major topics in my work. Last spring I made a new slide show consisting of this topic of Kids, which until now has only been exhibited in Greece but is now planned to be shown in an exhibition in London. The kids photos are greatly attended by the public and they are often moved by them.
