Crew set the depth at 30cm. Dive! Dive! Dive! Learn about the science of acid-base reactions and buoyancy while splashing around in the bath, with your very own submarine! Full instructions included.
How Does It Work? When you fill your Submarine with fuel, and place it in the water you create a chemical reaction. The fuel is a mixture of bicarbonate of soda (a Base, NaHCO3) and citric acid (an Acid, C6H8O7), which in the presence of water reacts to form sodium citrate (Na3C6H5O7), water and bubbles of carbon dioxide gas (CO2). The carbon dioxide bubbles are lighter than water and so cause the submarine to float!
Please note: Sodium citrate is not hazardous or irritating so feel free to splash around in the bath with your submarine. Just take care to avoid skin or eye contact with the fuel powder.
