It is 1939, the last London Season before the outbreak of war.
For the young debutantes, the Season promises four months of dances and parties, Ascot and the opera. Ronnie, the daughter of a rather eccentric Duke and Duchess, is amused to watch her charming brother pursued as the catch of the Season. Peggy, with her socially ambitious mother and a father in the rag trade, would prefer to go to Oxford but yields to parental pressure. Isabelle feels like a Frenchwoman, thanks to her father, and has no desire to spend the summer with her monstrous English mother. And then there is Anne: beautiful but uncomfortable among titled relatives she would prefer to stay in the country and paint.
For all four debutantes the Season is a superficially amusing, but stifling existence. And then, as the Season comes to an end, a world war threatens to tear Europe apart and destroy all their hopes for the future.
