Set in Sydney in 1828, Nicodemus Dunne is the running patterer, somebody who spreads the news of the day. Before his deportation he was a Bow Street Runner and his police knowledge makes him an ideal choice by Governor Darling to find who has been committing a series of gruesome and inventive murders.
