A Cornish Whodunnit Featuring Ex-Inspector John Reynolds
While hospitalised after being knocked over by a car, ex-Inspector John Reynolds meets Mrs Sparks, who is recovering from a nasty fall down a mine shaft. But the thing that most interests him, and the rest of the inhabitants of the Cornish village of St Breddaford, is what was found with the unfortunate Mrs Sparks at the bottom of the mine - a human skeleton, and among the bones a wedding ring featuring Mrs Sparks' husband's initials - the very same husband that was supposedly drowned at sea . . .
And when Mrs Sparks is herself murdered, there is no shortage of suspects in this most bizarre sequence of events: Mrs Sparks' pricky daughter, Anna, to whom John Reynolds is finding himself attracted against his will; her current boyfriend, Mike Tregonning; or what about Nurse Pengelly, who was on duty the night of Mrs Sparks' death?
But even if Reynolds does find out who murdered Mrs Sparks there is still the question of the identity of the skeleton in the mine shaft . . .
