On 2 August 1990, at the instruction of President Saddam Hussein, Iraqi tanks crossed the border into Kuwait. It was, in effect, an unexpected and unprovoked attack on a neighbouring country. In the days and weeks that followed, the anger of much of the world was directed at Iraq, and the situation erupted in a conflict known as the Gulf War.
Eventually, amid the death and destruction that war surely brings, the Iraqis were forced to withdraw. Why did Saddam invade Kuwait and what did he hope to gain? How did the global community respond? And what was the impact of the invasion upon the turbulent political situation in the Middle East?
