This high-drama series looks at those momentous days in the last century when great and terrible things transpired within 24 hours which would leave an impact on the history of the world for decades afterwards.
On 11 February 1990, Nelson Mandela was released from prison after 27 years. The end of captivity for Mandela marked the symbolic end to an infamous system known as apartheid, which had governed South Africa for nearly half a century.
Under apartheid, people were segregated along racial lines with the minority white population having power over the majority black population. Mandela was imprisoned in the 1960s for his part in the fight for equal rights.
So what change took place in South Africa to make Mandela's release possible? How did the rest of the world react? And did the free Nelson Mandela succeed in living up to the expectations of those people who had dreamed of his release for so long?
