David Hicks (1929-1998) is regarded as one of the finest and most influential interior designers of the twentieth century. Known for his bold use of colour, eclecticism and geometric designs in carpets and textiles, Hicks turned decorating on its head in the 50s and 60s. His trademark use of electrifying colour combinations, mixing antiques and modern furniture and abstract paintings became the in-style for the chic of the day, including Vidal Sassoon and Helena Rubenstein. He also designed rooms for the young Prince Charles and Princess Anne, a yacht for King Fahd of Saudi Arabia and a nightclub on the QE2 ocean liner. He had an unparalleled range of talents for designing carpet, fabric and wallpaper design, landscape architecture and garden design, commercial d?cor for restaurants and hotels, and interiors for homes and offices. By the 70s David Hicks had become a brand; his company was making wallpaper, fabrics and linens with outposts in eight countries, his wallpaper was even used in the White House. The book will pair an intimate biographical text written by Ashley Hicks about his father's life and work with dozens of images run alongside of his most famous interiors. Giving the book a personal feel will be the addition of personal and family memorabilia, including sketches, newspaper cuttings, magazine covers and all the incidental pictures of Hicks in his speedboat, his own snapshots of his encounters with such luminaries as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Grace Kelly and more.
