When lives are at stake, trust no one but yourself . . .
Anna Jacob should be enjoying some of the best days of her life. Weeks away from having her first child, she has been made a partner of her law firm at only thirty-two. But happiness eludes her. Something has gone askew in her marriage, there is a silence growing between Anna and her husband Max, who is struggling with the responsibility of fatherhood and to resist the rekindling of an old affair. They limp on through the birth of baby daughter, Maya and the hiring of a nanny.
Then a coincidence occurs, the sort of coincidence that changes lives. Max is seen by Debbie, the nanny, obviously in the midst of an affair and Anna's life is suddenly plummeted into chaos. The careful and self-contained Anna loses control. She turns to a man who seems to offer her safety and comfort and to the woman who cares for her child. But both of them have their own private despair and these are damaged lives.
Who can Anna trust? And when something truly terrible happens, when her baby disappears, who can she depend on, who is telling the truth, and who could possibly want to harm her . . .?
