With the growth of the internet comes new possibilities for crime. Identity theft, fraud, drug and gun trafficking, and child pornography have become both simpler and more profitable for enterprising criminals. The un-indexed corners of the internet that make up what is known as the 'Darknet' offer a haven for criminals. Meanwhile authorities struggle to regulate this new arena. However, not all of the activity is bad; some hackers try to use their skills for humane and political purposes. From the Wikileaks revelation to the DDOS attacks of Anonymous, groups of activists have attempted to hold authorities to account and force them into great transparency. The same techniques that enable criminals and terrorists can also expose authoritarian regimes and provide access to affordable, life-saving medicines.
