Who has not been tempted to escape the daily grind, hit the open road and findAmerica? It all started with a Harley-Davidson Road King Classic. In 2004,sexagenarian businessman John Gussenhoven purchased his first motorcycle andalmost instantly began conjuring plans for a cross-country trip. For someone whospent most of his childhood and youth in South America and missed growingup in the United States, he set out to explore the "foreign" country of his birth, taking off on a truly American bike to complete a truly American odyssey. Crisscrossing America is a photographic journal of a two-year, two-legjourney crisscrossing the United States--from Mt. Vernon, Washington, toNaples, Florida, and from San Diego, California, to Eastport, Maine. Of the 48continental states, 27 were crossed in total, only two states twice--Oklahoma andKansas. Routes were not planned in advance, but determined each day byweather, traffic and stamina. In this truly unique celebration of the United States, breathtaking aerial photographs by Jim Wark accompany the many groundlevelphotographs of small towns, roadside oddities, and beautiful scenery taken byGussenhoven as he discovered America one mile at a time. The unique couplingof ground and aerial images highlights and brings into relief details that almostall of us would miss if we saw them from only one perspective. Tragically, thisAmerica is rapidly disappearing before our eyes as we neglect our heritage andforsake the past, so the book takes on an even greater importance by preservingthese aspects of our country for generations to come.
