Make a metal detector that really works for finding treasures in your own backyard.
Build your own hand-held working metal detector and go hunting for hidden metal with this kit! 19 timber and electronic pieces join together with no glue required. All you will need to add is batteries. Once ready to go, it will emit a noise when it is near any metals. Perfect present for budding treasure hunters or engineers!
Metal detectors are usually a hand-held device that is useful for discovering hidden metal objects, or objects that contain some metal underground. Consisting of a sensor probe that is swept over the area being searched, and upon discovery a tone sounds an alarm to alert the user to the hidden item. Some metal detectors will have an indicator with a needle that will move to announce the exciting discovery instead of a sound.
Other metal detectors are seen at places like the airport, prisons and court houses. The upright, stationary walk-through version of a metal detector allows staff to monitor visitors as they enter into these locations and prevent any metal items through that may be unsafe or inappropriate.
Metal detectors work by using the magnetic field created by an oscillator that produces an alternating current through a coil. It senses the metal object when eddy currents are introduced by the object and then creates a magnetic field of its own. A secondary coil, acting as a magnetometer will allow the change of the magnetic field to be detected.Industrial metal detectors were developed in the 1960s and were mainly used for prospecting for minerals. Most of us will know the image of a prospector with a hand-held metal detector. Other important uses for metal detectors are detecting landmines, in construction to locate steel rebar and pipes and archaeology.
