Early 19th-century Hawaiian women created quilts using bright, solid-colored fabric. They would fold a large piece of fabric into quarters or eighths and cut flowing motifs symbolic of their lush environment. The practice of using a single piece of solid-color fabric hand-appliqued onto a white background became their tradition? a tradition that both inspired and stimulated the author when creating her own designs. With 26 patterns to get you started and easy-to-follow directions, learn to cut and stitch both hand- and machine-appliqued blocks. Projects include "Hawaiian Seas" wall quilts, "Hawaiian Christmas" with four blocks, and various flowers and sea creatures. The designs begin with single colour, appliqued blocks and progress to blocks adorned with additional colours and motifs. Quilters of all skill levels will discover a beautiful Hawaiian quilt to inspire them. AUTHOR: As a designer of quilts and fabric crafts for the past 20 years, Judy Sandstrom has had over 100 original designs published in various books and magazines. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Grove City College in western Pennsylvania. Judy has demonstrated products for craft manufacturers at professional shows and in stores, and has designed quilts to introduce new fabric lines. Judy's quilt designs run the gamut from miniature paper pieced wall quilts to intricate hand appliqued bed quilts. Rotary cutting and quick piecing are her methods of choice for quilt construction, although she prefers to complete her projects with hand quilting whenever possible. Judy loves to combine two different blocks to create a totally new design. Her quilts have won prizes at local quilt competitions. Judy's fabric crafts include window treatments, pillows, bags, no-sew projects made with iron-on adhesives, and simple clothing designs for children and dolls. Having raised four children with her husband Frank, she now enjoys sewing with her seven young grandchildren and teaching people of all ages the joy of working with fabric. Judy has presented fabric craft classes on cruise ships for the past several years. 83 colour images and 26 patterns
