The landscape comprises two strongly contrasting elements: the gritstone of the Dark Peak and the lighter limestone of the White Peak. The Dark Peak, north of Castleton, is also known as the High Peak and embraces the wildest terrain, the remotest farms and the highest hills. From the High Peak the gritstone extends south to create a horseshoe around the central White Peak, making a spectacular landscape feature and a mecca for rock-climbers.
