Seventeen-year-old Olivia and her friends Lou and Andy live on neighbouring farms, and are inseparable friends. Olivia is grieving over the loss of her father, and trying to come to terms with her mother's occasional live-in boyfriend. At the same time, she is trying to save the river that runs by their property from drying up, which her father had also been dedicated to doing.
Then their strange neighbour announces that his son Francis is coming to visit. Olivia falls in love with Francis and damages her friendship with Lou and Andy in the process. However, Olivia becomes distraught when her new relationship abruptly ends and she discovers a painful family secret. She is devastated by the loss of people in her life, as well as the potential loss of her friends.
We follow Olivia as she gradually mends old relationships, builds new ones and comes to terms with her family's past and the losses she has suffered.
