Hanan Ashrawi was a major player in the Middle East Peace process during the 1980s and 1990s and in 1995, she was elected to the Palestinian Legislative Council and served as Minister for Higher Education and Research in the Palestinian Authority for a number of years. She is an academic, human rights activist, and advocate for the Palestinians.
