The rapid economic development and urban sprawl in contemporary China has brought about a great lot of architectural practices with Chinese features. By reviewing the recent five years' development of the contemporary architecture in China from 2004-2008, we can perceive that China has been gradually involves in the process of globalization, while common consensus has been reached among more and more architects on exploring indigenous features. All of the 44 architects selected in this book, no matter how large or small, are the completed works that are most creative and critical in contemporary China. These architecture reflect the basic comprehension on the historical and cultural context in local area and the innovative responses from the perspective of Chinese and foreign architects. By interpreting and illustrating these works, the book will help us think about how to face the increasingly open market and the impact of globalization, seek out the integration of universal solutions and localism, and explore the design strategy and attitude of the contemporary architecture in China.
