This second selection of over 200 old photographs brought together by the Derwentdale Local History Society contiunes the dramatic story of Consett, its people and heritage. The lives and work surroundings of yesteryear have at time to be wondered at, as is the resilience, deteremination and community spirit which comes through in many of the reflecrions in this book. The remoteness of the town has borne in the people of Consett a spirit of independence and of common identity and knowledge of their neighbours and friends.
Many of the images in this collection reflect the rich industrial history of the area. The traditional industries of coal, iron and steel may now be gone but they live on in many people's memories. This volume captures moments from bygone days and there are many reminders that Consett is an area that local people are very proud of and will continue to be for many years to come.
