This is a murder mystery with a bit of a twist.
The narrator just might be the murderer. Ted Stevens is a trial lawyer whose drinking problem and pending divorce have set him in a tailspin. Stevens is appointed defense counsel in a high-profile murder case involving the death of a former client and secret lover. The lawyer must choose between concealing evidence that could help his client, or revealing the evidence and risk becoming a suspect himself. Plagued by alcoholic blackouts and bursts of temper, the fellow will keep readers guessing whether or not he killed his lover. The jacket cover contains this excerpt from Publisher's Weekly's review: "Writing in prose that is both staightforward and resonant, Lewis, a native Floridian and Tallahassee trial judge, clearly knows his legal and geographic territory. Better, he knows how to render a world filled with both evil and compassion. This well-crafted drama rings with authenticity all the way to it's heart-stopping conclusion.
