This is the story of Mary, her parents and her friend, Abel Stenross, owner of the paddlesteamer "Backwater Bessie". Mary lives on the banks of the mighty Murray and river life offers adventure for her and her friends. She encounters tiger snakes, soldier settlement on the land, hardship of life in the country and raging floods that nearly take her mother.
