Eleven-year-old Michael Murray is getting ready to wow everyone at the upcoming Talent Show with his keepy uppies as well as trying to fend off his arch-nemesis Dirty Alice who lives down the road, and avoiding eating his granny's awful casseroles and fairy cakes that are like little rocks (but Granny likes to bake, so you don't say anything). When his Ma comes home one evening with lots of bruises Michael begins to ask questions. He is told a man flashed her, and that he must keep it a secret. Living in a small community where everyone knows everyone, speculation arises as to how his Ma got the bruises and rumours begin to go around that Michael's Da is the culprit. But, when fifteen-year old Suzanne Miller, who works on the tills in the local supermarket has also been 'flashed' Michael is reminded that he must keep the secret about his Ma. As tensions rise in the community, Michael soon begins to realise that things are not what they seem.
