"There's no such thing as magic," said Dan. "There's only coincidence."
Lizzie would probably have agreed with him, until she cast a spell on their unbearable neighbours, the Potwards. The very next day, it appears that Lizzie's magic potion has made them move. The children should be delighted but their glee is short-lived, however, as they worry over who might move in. More magic (or machination) seems necessary, and the temptation to mix a potion for Lizzie's Physics teacher, Fish, is irresistible . . .
As for Max, he was so lonely he was happy to believe anything if it meant he could be a Witch's Assistant. He dances naked in the garden (well, he is wearing something, but a lampshade on the head hardly counts . . .), Lizzie considers the career prospects of a white witch, but Dan remains sceptical.
Soon the three Sharp children are caught in a web of secrecy and conspiracy as one spell leads to another, each more powerful than the last. And then Max decides to cast a spell of his own, on his very worst enemy . . .
