In September 1940 Britain was fighting for its life. Invasion was expected at any time and the nightly bombing of civilians put women and children in the forefront of the war. Against this backdrop, the British Government took the desperate decision to evacuate some of the most vulnerable children to the supposed safety of Canada. Ninety children left Britain on the SS City of Benares; only thirteen survived.
A German U-boat at the height of a storm torpedoed the ship after it reached the supposed safety of US waters. For the first time 'Children Of The Doomed Voyage' tells the story in the child-survivors' own words.
