This gripping story tells the tale of Lester Ballard, a solitary and inverted young backwoodsman dispossessed of his ancestral land. Psychologically displaced but endowed with a rich and lurid imagination, he haunts the hill country of East Tennessee. From commonplace brushes with humanity - in homesteads, stores and in the woods - his frustrations mount. His repressed sexuality gradually wells up and spills over, until he is roaming the woods at will, seeking the next victim for his strange lusts. The story moves swiftly to its horrific conclusion.
The writing is lyrical in the sympathetic description of Lester and of his pastoral world; but also dark and urgent in describing the terrors within Lester, in the woods, and in the earth itself.
