For generations, vessels built on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay have been famous among seafaring peoples of Europe and America. In Maryland and Virginia, the two states which confine the bay, the master shipwrights have always been experimental designers of sturdy vessels for use wherever speed has been the prime requirement._x000D_Some, like the Baltimore clipper, have become world famous. Little note has been made, however, of other types of craft, even though their utility and length of service have been considerably longer. This volume redresses that oversight._x000D_Brewington traces the history of log canoes and bugeyes, providing meticulous descriptions of the hulls, rigging, fittings, and specialized equipment used on these unique bay craft. The plates give lines and sail plans for more than a score of specific vessels._x000D_This combined edition of Chesapeake Bay Log Canoes, first published in 1937, and Chesapeake Bay Bugeyes, first published in 1941, is a revised and enlarged version. Its publication has been made possible through the cooperation of The Mariners' Museum, Newport News, Virginia. AUTHOR: M. V. Brewington (1902?1974) was a native of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, as were his forebears who settled there in 1669. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, he followed his family footsteps into the banking business, but during collegiate summers, he shipped out to sea. His lifelong interest in the sea and seafaring became his career and hobby. His expertise in maritime history led to wartime and postwar appointments as a librarian and cataloguer of historical records for the U.S. Navy. Brewington's outstanding career in maritime history includes becoming the maritime curator of the Maryland Historical Society, assistant director and curator of Maritime History at the Peabody Museum of Salem, and trustee or overseer of several other maritime institutions, including the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels. He was among the founders and editorial advisors of The American Neptune. In addition, M.V. Brewington wrote a number of articles and books, including Chesapeake Bay Log Canoes and Bugeyes.
