The Belgian-born artist Carsten Holler (b.1961) will undertake the seventh commission in 'The Unilever Series' for the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern. The annual challenge to fill the hall's immense space is one of the most prestigious and demanding in contemporary art. Holler's work ranges from the purely conceptual to the elaborately architectural and frequently requires the participation of its audience to achieve its final form.
Well used to working on a large scale, his central concerns relate to altered states of perception, play, mass communal experience, and the questioning of the logic that governs everyday life. Recent works have features slowed-down fairground rides, playground slides, a ceiling of enormous, hypnotically rotating mushrooms, and a series of electric, mirrored, sliding doors that create an endless reflective passage for the audience to pass through. He has referred to these works as 'confusion machines'. "My objects are tools or devices with a specific use, which is to create a moment of slight confusion or to induce hallucinations in the widest sense," he recently told an interviewer.
This publication follows Holler as he approaches the adventure of tackling the Turbine Hall, providing a close-up examination of his creative process from inception to completion. The book features stunning illustrations and photography throughout.
