Despite its atmosphere of timeless tranquility, Cephallonia is no stranger to the ravages of invasion and war. And when the Axis powers occupy the beautiful Greek island in 1941, its inhabitants treat the newcomers with the same quiet resistance and contempt as their many predecessors.
But the local garrison commander Captain Correlli, billeted with Dr Iannis and his spirited daughter Pelagria, proves to be not only a superb musician but also a truly remarkable man. In spite of their initial hostility the villagers, and especially Pelagria, begin to realise that not only the war but the "small miracle" that is Corelli will change their lives utterly.
