Cannes Cinema is an extraordinary family photo album of the greatest international film gala: the Festival de Cannes.
From the very first Cannes Film Festival in 1939 right up to the present day, three generations of photographers from the Traverso family have immortalized the world's most beautiful film stars – from Grace Kelly to Penélope Cruz – and greatest film directors – from Louis Lumière to Quentin Tarantino.
From the spontaneity of real-life beach scenes snapped in the 1960s to the glamorous poses shot on the red carpet in the 2000s, Cannes Cinema documents not only the history of the festival, but also that of cinema, through some 550 photographs.
Each of the images is accompanied by an explanatory commentary by Serge Toubiana, the director of Cinémathèque française.
His insider's view, told with warmth and humour, recounts both the anecdotes and the broad historical narrative, and reveals the triumphs and scandals that have made the festival what it is.
