Twenty-four stunning residential exemplars of the Spanish Colonial and Mission styles, principally located in Southern California. The houses are richly decorated-variously with authentic Monterey furniture, California tile, Navajo rugs, Bauer and Catalina plates and pitchers. Several of the houses featured have been restored by Keaton (one of which she lives in currently), among them a 1927 Spanish Colonial classic in Bel-Air.
The Spanish Colonial and Mission-style architecture of Southern California's seaside estates, canyon villas, and courtyard bungalows is central to its romantic images, one that has traditionally evoked a Mediterranean paradise. The details of this inexhaustively rich style – ornate wrought iron and wood balconies, colorful tiles, graceful arches, and palm-dotted gardens – reflect the region's Spanish, Mexican, and Southwestern history and culture as well as its poular outdoor lifestyle.
Houses of white stucco, cloistered patios, tile roofs, exposed beam ceilings; displaying influences of Spanish and Italian Renaissance, eighteenth-century Spanish plateresque and churrigueresque forms, and Moorish-Andalusian styles.
