A prominent art critic is found dead, his face frozen in a mask of terror and his body temperature grotesquely high, the acrid small of Brimstone hangs heavy in the air. Agent Pendergast, an old acquaintance of the victim, arrives to investigate. Within a week, new bodies are discovered, and their only connection is this bizarre but identical manner of death.
