From the first General Secretary of the representative association of the armed forces, this is their unseen history The subject of this 'Breaking Ranks' is the birth of the representative body of the Irish Defence Force, PDFORRA, the circumstances which brought its creation to pass, and the influence this had on the fundamental reshaping of civil-military relations in Ireland. This book will provide new knowledge of how the State and the Armed Forces in Ireland interacted with each other and will do so in the context of events such as the 'mutinies' in the Curragh in 1914 and the formation of a new Irish state.. With unprecedented access to secret files of the Department of Defence, it will provide an insight into the fundamental arguments made by either side in their pursuit of, and opposition to, representative associations in the army. Finally it will contribute to our knowledge of civil-military relations by highlighting and adding a new dimension to it for scholarly consideration and its application in other countries in this field of study.
