A slice of life - and love - Tahitian style . . .
Meet Materena Mahi, a vibrant, funny young Tahitian woman. Materena wants a ring on her finger and a framed wedding certificate one the wall. But the father of her three children, Pito, thinks that when you give a woman a ring and a wedding certificate she's going to start acting like she's the boss. "Eh," he insists, "It's the rope around the neck".
Then again, if there's not ring, a woman can tell her man to pack his bags and go home to his mama whenever she likes. So what does Materena really want?
As we follow Materena through the joys and perils of family life in Tahiti, we meet a cast of wonderful characters, from cousin Rita and her sexy-loving boyfriend, Coco, to Loana, Mama Roti, Ati and the sexy Lily.
Redolent of the fruit, flowers and languor of the tropics, 'Breadfruit' is full of unselfconsciously sexy, warm, strong women pitting their wits against life. The islands, their inhabitants and lifestyle are portrayed with clear-eyed affection and a gentle, sly humour.
