Young widow with a scandalous past meets arrogant, self-assured man who has a great sense of propriety.
Clara and Masters meet near her home in Norwich when he believes she has stolen his watch and, in a bid to "teach her a lesson" by frightening her, ties her to his bed. After she reveals that she is Lady Westington (a story he doubts), Masters releases her, but comes to her home the next day to check on her story and to return some articles of clothing that she has left behind. A sudden illness forces him to stay for a week, and the two share a very passionate encounter before he returns to London.
Clara comes to London a month later and encounters Masters at a ball. She decides to help him find a wife, to repay a favor he has done her. But she discovers that she is pregnant. She is about to reveal this to him when he announces that he is about to propose to another woman. Clara is surprised to discover that she feels only relief ; she need not be forced into a marriage. She makes plans to have the baby in secret, and to pretend that she has become the child's guardian.
But as Clara and Masters are thrown together more and more, the harder it is to hide her secret... and the harder it is to resist the temptation.
