First Book of the Change.

This is a fantasy set in a world of huge, red-sanded deserts, sunken buildings, vast coastlines where ships seldom appear and large skies ruled by the Sky Wardens. It is a sparsely populated landscape that Sal and his father Gershom have been steadily roaming for as long as Sal can remember. Moving from one small settlement to another, they have always been together and Sal has never questioned this, though he longs to know more about his mother.

Then they arrive in the settlement of Fundelry, closer to the sea than they have ever been, and Sal is aware that things are different. His father is hiding something. Soon, the secret threads and unanswered questions of Sal's life start to tug at him, especially when he is rescued from the local bully by the girl Shilly and her teacher Lodo, the old tattooed man who lights the lamps in Fundelry.

As the time approaches when the Sky Wardens are to come and select the young teenagers to be trained in "the change", Sal must learn, and learn fast, not only about himself and his father, but about love and freedom.
